Effects of Spectral Dispersion of Cloud Droplet Size Distributions on Radiative Properties of Clouds and Dispersion Forcing
where L is the liquid water content, and ρw is the density of water. In effect, these studies implicitly assume the only effect of aerosols on cloud microphysical properties is to increase N, and re can be parameterized by Eq. (1) for monodisperse droplet size distributions. Eq. (1) has also been used in the parameterization of re. However, available data suggests the spectral shape of the clou...
متن کاملAerosol-Cloud Interactions In Global Models Of Indirect Aerosol Radiative Forcing
The sensitivity of cloud optical properties with respect to parameters that affect aerosol activation is examined. Of particular interest are the effect of volatile gases (such as HNOs), slightly soluble and surfactant species. An adiabatic parcel model is used to simulate cloud droplet formation. Cloud optical properties are calculated from these simulations.
متن کاملDispersion of Cloud Droplet Size Distributions, Cloud Parameterizations and Indirect Aerosol Effects
Most studies of the effect of aerosols on cloud radiative properties have considered only changes in the cloud droplet concentration, neglecting changes in the spectral shape of the cloud droplet size distribution. However, it has been shown that that the spectral dispersion of the cloud droplet size distribution (defined as the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean radius of the droplet ...
متن کاملBlack carbon radiative heating effects on cloud microphysics and implications for aerosol indirect forcing: 1. Extended Köhler theory
Black carbon (BC) aerosol absorbs sunlight that might have otherwise been reflected to space and changes the radiative heating of the atmosphere and surface. These effects may alter the dynamical and hydrological processes governing cloud formation. A new, microphysical, effect of BC on climate is identified here, in which solar heating within BCcontaining cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) slows ...
متن کاملIndirect Radiative Forcing by Ion-Mediated Nucleation of Aerosol
A clear understanding of particle formation mechanisms is critical for assessing aerosol indirect radiative forcing and associated climate feedback processes. Recent studies reveal the importance of ion-mediated nucleation (IMN) in generating new particles and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) in the atmosphere. Here we implement the IMN scheme into the Community Atmosphere Model version 5 (CAM5)...
